The return direction matters
A compactor must know when to stop and reverse the ram. A failed directional switch, drive component or control can interrupt that sequence.
Forcing the drawer or ram can damage the drive and create an injury risk.
Keep safety interlocks intact
Drawer and door interlocks prevent operation when the unit is not safely closed. They should never be bypassed to make a jammed compactor run.
Disconnect power and keep hands away from the mechanism when movement is abnormal.

Tell the office whether the ram is up or down, whether the drawer opens, what sound occurs when Start is pressed and whether the breaker or reset has tripped.
